Under Construction: Water Fountains/Bottle Fill System

Throughout the building, we are getting closer to water fountains on each corner of every floor and in every Pre-K classroom. At this time, please provide enough water for your child for the school day as we are not using the water coolers. We have been told these should be up and running by the third or fourth week of November.

Could your child be sick? Contact Nurse Stone (on leave 9/21-11/1) & Nurse Managault

Please review this diagram to help you decide when you should send your child to school. If your child stays home, you must contact Ms. Coleman and Nurse Stone (on leave 9/21-11/1) & Nurse Managault.

Click the image above for more detail.

The Jersey City Public Schools District Nurse has developed a comprehensive informational powerpoint. Included is guidance for coming to school, traveling, vaccinations and much more.

COVID Concerns, Quarantine and Close Contact

Anyime your child is out for anything medical, please make sure you contact Nurse Managault (tbrown3@jcboe.org) and Ms. Coleman (dcoleman@jcboe.org).

If a any individual has COVID, thorough contact tracing happens through the Nurse. Close contacts within the school are then established. Please remember that close contact is defined as 15 minutes without a mask and not distanced (3 feet).

If an individual is in school and is positive for COVID and close contacts are identified as students, parents will receive notification of that from the nurse directly. This information will include days they should quarantine and the nurse will continue to check in daily with the students.

Once a student is told to quarantine by the nurse, they will need to look at Google Classroom for details of instruction while at home. The first day, the student should receive asynchronous instruction through assignments on Google Classroom. After that, students can zoom into class and continue to check Google Classroom for details of instruction.

REMINDERS

District Title 1 Parent Meetings

General Reminders for Parents/Guardians

Please be reminded of the following that teachers should have shared with you:
  • Students who are picked up early for appointments will not be permitted to return to the building that day even if the child is in CASPER.
  • To reduce traffic and the possible spread of COVID parents will not be permitted to bring lunch or water bottles to the building for students who left these items behind.  Since lunch is free for all students this year, the children will be fed if they forgot to bring it with them. If there is a medical concern for your child, please ensure you have communication with the nurse to address their needs.
  • In order to support smoother entry/dismissal, please do not engage in conversations with the teacher during drop off or dismissal. Please set up time via email to meet virtually.
  • We appreciate your trust to have your child here for school. We need you to allow your children to walk with their class into the building. Say goodbye outside and help their independence by doing so.
  • Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we fight the spread of disease, together.
  • Any questions/concerns should be directed to Mr. Stanton

Attendance

Being punctual and present are core responsibilities of parents and students. The JCPS Student Code of Conduct and promotional policy clearly lay out maximum absences that may prevent promotion. Lateness and Absences will be considered unexcused without appropriate documentation submitted to Ms. Coleman (dcoleman@jcboe.org) in the attendance office (109W). All excused absences and the documentation needed is explicitly defined in the JCPS Student Code of Conduct. Parent notes will inform us of absence but will not excuse it.

Visitor Entry

Consistent with last Spring, there will be NO visitors to the building without an appointment. All visitors to the school must enter through the metal detector and thermal scan at the main entrance on Erie St. and sign in at the security desk. This is a point of safety and protection for all of our students and staff. All doors outside are locked throughout the year and you may only enter through the main entrance in order to come into the school.

Welcome from our School-Based Mental Health Clinician, Ms. Mehda Kudaisya

My name is Medha and I am delighted to become a part of the Cordero school community for the 2021-22 school year as a School-Based Mental Health Clinician. Our company, Reimagined Mind, has been contracted by the Jersey City Board of Education to provide counseling and therapeutic services to students who may be facing challenges that impact their academic, social and emotional growth and development. Our mission, as clinicians for Reimagined Mind, is to promote holistic wellbeing for the child using evidence-based and trauma-informed practices while recognizing that mental health, physical health and academic performance do not exist in silos, but are interconnected.

As a Reimagined Mind clinician, I will be based at Cordero Community School for the entire year, 5 days a week, providing individual and group therapy to students who are referred to me via the school counselors. It can be challenging being a student, especially during these times of masking up and social distancing, and our goal is to work with students who may need some extra support navigating these and other challenges that impact their social and emotional domains.

While my journey to become a mental health clinician took a couple of turns on the way, working with families and survivors of trauma has always been important to me, and I have in the past worked with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, as well as provided peer-to-peer support to families who have youth with behavioral, mental, developmental or substance abuse challenges via Performcare NJ. I am a social worker by training, and graduated with my MSW from Rutgers University. I’m an immigrant, originally from India, but have been a proud New Jerseyan since 2010, and am a resident of Hudson County. I am also a parent to a first grader as well as a furbaby, a Girl Scout troop leader and dream of obtaining a PhD in trauma-informed interventions for immigrants.
